May 2013 04:00 12/05/2013 Saturday evening... 45 minutes. A walk, but ran some of the way, and I feel like I have had a run. I felt kind of energetic before going - as if I needed to burn off some energy. I haven't felt like that in a while. I had Lucerne School of Music Radio on the headphones. Not a very inspiring programme tonight. I met a fox on the footpath. He was coming the other way and hesitated when he saw me approaching. He decided to leave the footpath to me and he took a detour through someone's front garden. Oh yes, I had a bit of a disappointment a week or so ago. The knee problem that started last summer. The right knee going out of position while kneeling and clunking painfully back into position when straightening the leg. That happened again while I was working. I had been sitting on my heels in some airing cupboard or other, stood up and CLUNK! The knee was quite sore for a day or two after that. I actually went to the GP (doctor) the next day and went off to get it x-rayed that afternoon. It was sore to the point where it was difficult getting in and out of the car. However, the next day it was completely fine. Odd. Things don't normally recover that quickly. Anyway, it only seems to be an issue when I kneel deeply and put weight on my heels, so I'm certainly not going to let it stop me running or walking. 02:23 21/05/2013 Monday night... Went for a long walk. Well, went for a walk and kept going on a long loop. Don't know how long but I managed to get a blister. Wrong socks. 7 miles maybe? I'm kind of coming to the conclusion that brisk walking is enough for me at the moment. I think I'll stay off the actual running for a while. 23:32 23/05/2013 Thursday night...
Not been out for a run/walk today so this is just a thought - an update to Monday's longish brisk walk in unsuitable footwear. Two things: one is that the blister is OK. I'll just keep a plaster on it to stop the skin rubbing off as I walk; the other thing is that I felt really tired Monday night and Tuesday but have felt kind of strong and bouncy the last couple of days and have noticed it being easier to climb stairs. I think that suggests it was a useful challenge and that it has made me a little stronger to go for a longer walk. I wasn't running but I did break into a sweat and was walking fairly fast. I measured the loop and found it was in fact 6.9 miles, so about 10.5 km. I've had it in my mind for a while that I have wanted to run a 10km race. One way is to gradually run further and further until I can contemplate running 10km, but another way is simply to walk 10km and then walk it a bit faster, and then walk-run-walk 10km, and gradually work on getting the time down until I'm running all the way. I'm coming up to age 53. I am a couple of stone (28 lb or 12kg) overweight and I have knee issues, amongst other musculo-skeletal issues. Maybe it's just not that clever to be running. At least not until I've lost a bit of weight. Walking will get me further. Walking can take me way into the mountains, whereas running can't really do that. Walking for long distances is excellent exercise and there is less risk of injury. It does take more time, but then to balance that, there is no time taken getting changed or showering off because I can generally go walking in normal street clothing and don't get sweaty. I'm taking it easy just now as I'm going to Wales this weekend to walk up some mountains. Really looking forward to that. |
