November 2013

07:42 19/11/2013 Tuesday morning...

I just went for an early morning walk. Down towards the river. An hour or so maybe. Nice and frosty but also patches of muddy mud around. Full moon - or nearly full at least. Still breaking in a new pair of boots. I'm getting to like the boots well enough I think. A bit of boot-related tendon soreness in the back of the right ankle still, but that's better than it was when they were brand new.

Anyway, I've not been running at all, but I have been going for walks fom time to time. The last post in this blog was back in June but that doesn't mean I've been sitting indoors all summer. In fact I feel a fair bit fitter than I did back then. I lost a bit of weight, then put it back on, so I'm weighing about the same as I did then, but I feel a bit fitter and stronger. I've not been doing any exercise at all apart from occasional walks, but I've been working more lately, and since my job is sometimes quite physical, that probably accounts for the fact I feel a bit stronger.

However, I've not been eating so cleverly, and that has been making me feel heavy and tired much of the time. I've been eating a lot of biscuits and cakes and sugary things like that, as well as eating a lot of fast food like fried fish and steamed frozen vegetables. Also, milk, cheese, and all those heavy dairy foods. Drinking tea with milk all day long. I've noticed my sweat smells a bit stonger than normal. I think it must be the diet. Yesterday I felt compelled to eat something sweet and sugary for breakfast, even though I had already eaten a good breakfast. That resulted in a kind of dull headache that lasted the whole day. That made me realise it is a kind of addiction, and if I get out of the habit of eating sugar I don't feel the craving for it. As I came home and popped some Ibuprofen I decided that something has to change. The first thing is I'm going to knock sugar out of my diet completely. Well, as far as possible. Almost all processed food has sugar in it - even the sausages I bought yesterday had 3% sugar for some reason - and of course fresh fruit and vegetables have natural sugar in them - and I'm not planning on cutting out those! - but no cakes, no biscuits, no chocolate, no sugar in tea, and I shall avoid processed foods with added sugar as far as possible without being stupid about it.

Also, I'm quite into re-starting a regular habit of early morning walks. It's partly for the exercise and partly because it's a way of convincing myself I live in a place that isn't totally overcrowded. In the early mornings the fields and woods are empty of humanity, and I like starting the day alone in nature.

07:58 20/11/2013 Wednesday morning...

Nice walk out in the fields down by the river at dawn. A shorter walk than yesterday. Maybe an hour. I was annoyed (again!) by a powerful floodlight shining across the fields from a farm the other side of the river. I decided to go and investigate. I walked across and found the farm, and met someone leaving in a car. She didn't live there in fact, but she knew about the floodlight. I'll go there another day at a more sociable time and have a talk with them about it.

But a good walk. The boots seem to be getting more comfortable. I think it's partly a matter of having to develop slightly different muscles in feet, ankles and lower legs to adjust to the specific shape and stiffness on the boots. There's no rubbing and there's plenty of room for my toes to wiggle. I think they'll be OK.

The good thing about walking in the winter - oh, it was a bit frosty but less so than yesterday - is that I tend to walk faster. I feel like I've had some exercise.
